The coffee tree produces a cherry that holds within its ripe fruit two beans. (Of course, in five percent of the cherries there is only one bean- this is called a pea berry. This is another story.) The cherries are picked, their fruit discarded and the beans are dried and sorted. At this stage, they are called “green beans.”
Green beans are then sold to a variety of importers and exporters who in turn sell them to coffee vendors and specialty coffee stores like Prescott Coffee Roasters.
Unlike the huge, faceless food conglomerates that churn out pre-ground coffee sold in large silver cans, we are committed to the fair trade program and to dealing with coffee cooperatives that ensure the growers get a living wage and we get great coffee. Our importers often know the farmers personally and pay them fairly.
Once they arrive at our little shop in Prescott, the still-green beans get roasted and turned into the delicious fresh coffee that our customers line up for every morning. Prescott Coffee Roasters roasts coffee from all over the world. Much like wine, coffee from different regions has different characteristics. Our Roast Masters' job is to determine which roast will best accentuate each type of coffee’s unique flavor profile and also to create optimal blends of coffee to enhance your coffee drinking experience.
- Single Origin Coffees are from a single farm, region, or country.
- Blends are made of a blend of single origin coffees.
- Light Roast coffees are roasted for a shorter period of time at lower temperatures to preserve the acid profile of a coffee.
- Full City Roast is designed to capture the truest flavor of any single bean. Lighter and darker roasts are then utilized to highlight specific characteristics.
- Triple Roasted coffee is a blend of light, full city and dark roasts that create a perfectly balanced cup of coffee.
- Dark Roasted are roasted longer and at higher temperatures to create bold, deep, full-bodied coffees.
